Sarah’s Extra-Special Heirloom Redesign Gown

Sarah Mountray Gown low back, kansas city hawthorne house We had the opportunity to remake a truly special gown for bride Sarah-- this dress has such rich history, and we completely transformed the puffy-sleeved truly vintage style into a sleek gown worthy of any hip modern bride! Sarah's grandmother 1955 vintage silk wedding dress Sarah is the 3rd generation and 4th bride to wear this Italian Silk wedding gown, which was purchased in NYC for $125.00 in 1955... (Wowzers! That would have been an expensive dress then and the silk is still in flawless condition!) Sarah's grandmother wore the dress in April, 1955, and her great aunt also wore the dress in 1960. Sarah's great Aunt in 1955 wedding dress, vintage wedding gown, silk The dress was first altered by Sarah's mother, who was married in June 1989.  Then, sleeves were shortened and material from the skirt was used to make side panels. Sarah in original vintage gown before remaking To transform Sarah's special dress, the small team of local seamstresses at "Janay A Eco Bridal" took nearly the entire dress apart and used the fabric to cut an entirely new pattern. We left the bodice beading intact, adding fabric in to make it fit and adding an entirely new "under dress" to maintain the integrity of the delicate silk overlay.  We created her new dress with heirloom quality organic linings and more modern boning and structure for the best fit. Amber’s Re-Imagined Heirloom Gown

We're so thrilled that Amber brought her beautiful mother's wedding dress to us to re-imagine into the sweet modern-meets-vintage gown that it became! Her original lace was removed entirely and then placed on top of entirely new upgraded fabrics in a more modern slim A-line cut.  We used Silk-Hemp and Organic Cotton lining for comfy and breathable heirloom quality. She was so sweet to wear her gown again at a fashion show, what an amazing lady!

"If I told me years ago I would wear my mothers dress at my own wedding, I would have never believed you. I considered myself pretty non-traditional bridal style and knew shopping for dresses would be a challenge. The option to design my own dress, to my style and have the sentimental value of my mothers dress was the perfect combination."      -Amber

"Janay worked to find my vision and keep the integrity of the dress's original style, re-imagined." -Amber

From her Mom: "I bought my dress in the summer of  1982 at the only store in our local town which carried wedding dresses.   My mother & I went together and as soon as I tried this dress on, I knew it was the one."

Maria + Tim

We were able to honor Maria's family by altering her Mother's Wedding Gown for their nuptials.  Not only was the dress meaningful beyond measure, it was so very lovely with shades of blush pink and creme vintage lace.

Beyond pretty eye candy, this couple embodies the depth of what it can mean to get married today...their story of helping others through their wedding reflects heart-centered living and is truly inspiring.

   In the bride's words:
I was basically the anti-bride. I wanted to elope but my then-fiance now-husband convinced me otherwise. Instead of having a traditional wedding, Tim and I decided to use a portion of our budget to sponsor a child in Honduras whose birthday is our wedding anniversary.

Enter: my mother's timeless style and Janay's amazing handiwork. With just a few tweaks, Janay effortlessly modernized my mom's wedding dress into the look and feel I never knew I wanted. Working with her was an absolute dream.
As it turns out, wearing my mother's dress was one of the most special aspects of the experience. There's a beautiful photo of my grandmother, who recently passed away, helping my mom fix her train. Now we have a photo of my mom helping me into that same dress on my own wedding day. And who knows -- maybe someday there will be a photo of me zipping it onto the next generation.

Carly+ Conner with Special Video!

I am so thrilled to share this special Video that we made documenting the entire process of creating Carly's dream dress- from design to final fitting!  It all started by Carly's mom asking (in secret!) for a few photos from the sewing of her gown once we had designed it, which sparked the idea to capture the entire process. Carly doesn't live near our KC studio, so she flew in for her fittings and we turned the alterations around in a few days for her.  We really, really love creating custom gowns for brides, and hope that translates through this little tale of the dress we created for Carly + Conner's wedding.

Lindsey’s Custom Gown with Purple

We just made this awesome dress for Lindsey, I love how the bodice and lines are so clean and classic, but the colorful hand-dyed purple Silk Hemp and the fun low back and slit in the skirt! "The dress was so perfect and comfortable, I didn't want to take it off! And I received so many compliments on it...especially on the little bit of bling on the back. Thank you for making it so easy to get the dress of my dreams!"  -Lindsey

"I wore jewelry from my dearly departed grandmother, Merline. Her gorgeous amethyst earrings served as my something borrowed, while her sparkling star sapphire ring did double-duty as my something old and my something blue."

Couple playing Music together at wedding, dress by Janay A

"Gary and I love playing music together. We decided to play our first song together as a married couple at the reception, "Life's a Happy Song" from "The Muppets"... The chorus, "Life's a happy song when there's someone by my side to sing along" sums it up so well!

"We wanted to make sure that everyone who attended the wedding walked away feeling like they have a good sense of who we are and what we value as a couple. We picked readings that spoke deeply to us and made us laugh and cry, and we wrote our own vows to ensure we really captured what was important.  Spending time with our family, friends and amazing vendors brought us so much joy, it was truly the perfect day!"
~Mission definitely accomplished!~
